Stephen's brief personal info
About me: I was raised in Boulder, CO, then went to college in Connecticut.
Thanks to the Budapest Semesters in Math, I lived for one fall in Hungary.
I was in lovely Pasadena, CA until 2011, at which point I traded it for Paris.
- I am now using Picasa Web Albums for sharing pictures. They allow for much bigger pictures than facebook, and there is a nice full-screen mode. But I still have online pictures scattered throughout other sites:
- Mountains climbing log since 2000 (usually up-to-date).

Even though XKCD is uber-trendy at Caltech, I can't resist two links to specific XKCD strips: the James Bond and Raptor Exams, although this
raptor one is also pretty good.
The XKCD raptor exam was inspiration for this
homework
I wrote when instructing ACM11; the students hated the problem.
- I was involved with Caltech GSC flag football for a few years, playing for the "Playmakers". It's fantastic. I finally learned what a corner-back does, and I get to run routes against the students I teach (maybe that's why they let me catch the ball...).
We were school champions in '07 and '09 (though there are only 4 teams).

I was the president of the Caltech Alpine club. I spent the club's money, messed with the website,
and tried my best to make sure that no undergraduates died. We lead big winter mountaineering trips twice a year, and other people lead rock climbing trips several times per week.
Notable trips that I've led (most trips had about a dozen participants):
Mt. Shasta via Whitney glacier in summer '06, Mt. Whitney in winter '07,
Mt. Whitney and Mt. Sill in winter '08, Mt.Whitney and Mt. Shasta (via Casaval Ridge) in winter '09, Mt. Whitney in winter in '10, Mt. Gayley and North Palisade Pk in winter in '10.
Thanks in part to the Moore-Hufstedler funds and other sources, the club has received about $10k in grants the past 4 years, funding several wilderness first aid courses as well as avalanche courses. We also host the annual Banff Mountain Film Festival on campus.
